Last week, Austrian World Heritage experts visited the historic Roman spa city of Băile Herculane (Hercules Bath). The group was officially invited by Mayor Nicusor Vasilescu. With the support of the Romanian Government, the City Council is currently working on projects to renovate the historic town center and to sustainably develop the tourism in and around Băile Herculane.
During their three day stay the group together with Dr. Walter Reiter (L&R Social Research) and Bernd Paulowitz (insitu World Heritage consulting) met representatives of the city of Băile Herculane, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the local tourism association.
An informative on-site inspection of the historic town centre including the spa and the surrounding national park was organized by Dorin Balteanu, STABBS. In addition constructive discussions took place and assisted the delegation to comprehend the administrative challenges being faced in the historical site development and restoration. The local authorities and stakeholders of Băile Herculane are attending the World Heritage Training, organised by L&R Social Research in Hallstatt in the coming months. This innovative training platform sets a precedent, as Baile Herculane is an important model with substantial parallels to other existing Word Heritage Sites. “The modules have been established and will be bookable in the near future. This provides a new mobile training program for the 400 World Heritage sites in Europe and for comparable development sites which emphases sustainability ”, said Dr. Walter Reiter, managing director of L&R Social Research.
Due the success of the activities in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt/Dachstein-Salzkammergut, Băile Herculane`s attention has been drawn to the expertise of the Austrian World Heritage Experts. The region Inneres Salzkammergut was represented by Mayor Alexander Scheutz, Township Hallstatt. Since 2009, the Inneres Salzkammergut has been working in conjunction with L&R Social Research on establishing an international network of Word Heritage Expertise and capacity building. In addition to the annual World Heritage Conference, courses and strategic projects will permit opportunities for tourism, labour market policies and education.
