Bucharest - 08 octombrie 2013 - Georgeta Gavriloiu has joined the Bucharest office of Schoenherr, one of the leading corporate law firms in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), as senior associate in the firm’s competition practice. A renowned personality on competition matters and most recently a senior official at the Romanian Competition Council Gavriloiu further strengthens Schoenherr’s standing as a preeminent source of legal advice on competition and antitrust issues, both in Romania and across the firm’s additional 13 offices in the CEE region.

"Our clients will benefit from the impressive amount of technical expertise that Georgeta brings to Schoenherr. We are very glad to have someone of Georgeta’s stature join our team," states Sebastian Gutiu, the managing partner of Schoenherr’s Bucharest office.

"Our efforts to consolidate our local competition practice have been successful. With specialists of exceptional experience and skills like Georgeta in its team, Schoenherr can offer its clients in Romania outstanding competition advice," mentions Cătălin Suliman, the local partner heading the Bucharest office’s Competition group.

"We are pleased to have such a reputable competition expert join our practice. This addition to our team contributes to creating a centre of excellence in Romania," adds Franz Urlesberger, the Vienna-based partner who serves as the head of Schoenherr’s EU and Competition practice group.

Proven track record

Georgeta Gavriloiu provides legal advice on the entire array of competition matters in all sectors of the economy, but with a particular focus on the industrial and energy sectors. Prior to joining Schoenherr, Georgeta spent more than sixteen years at the Romanian Competition Council.

Between 2007 and 2011, Georgeta acted as the liaison officer in antitrust matters between the Romanian Competition Council and the European Commission’s DG Competition. She acted as the one of the Romanian Competition Council’s main contact points in various working groups chaired by the Commission and in the meetings of the Advisory Committee on Restrictive Practices and Dominant Positions.

Starting with February 2011, Georgeta headed the Competition Council’s Directorate for Industry and Energy - an investigative unit responsible for the application of the national and EU competition rules in the industrial and energy sectors. She was involved in various investigations in antitrust cases (e.g. anticompetitive agreements – cartels and vertical restraints and abuses of dominant position), assessment of mergers and acquisitions, and also investigations of the anticompetitive effects of administrative acts issued by local and central administrations.

Strong involvement in law amendment processes

In addition to her practice of law, an important area of Georgeta’s experience rests in the preparation of the Competition Council’s position on those draft laws and draft government decisions that would impact competition in the energy and industrial sectors.

In addition, she was a member of the project team (leading the Legislation component) in an assignment carried out by Romanian Competition Council with EU financing and advisory services provided by the World Bank. At the same time, Georgeta was responsible for drafting a template Compliance Program aimed at further increasing the awareness of competition rules in Romania.

Starting February 2013, Georgeta represented the Competition Council in the Advisory Committee of the National Regulatory Authority for Energy.
