Cătălin Suliman joins Schoenherr as head of competition practice

Bucharest - 11 iulie 2013 - Cătălin Suliman has joined the Bucharest office of Schoenherr, one of the leading corporate law firms in Central and Eastern Europe, as head of the firm’s competition practice in Romania. A key expert on competition matters, Cătălin further strengthens Schoenherr’s standing as a preeminent source of legal advice on competition and antitrust issues both in Romania and across the firm’s additional 13 offices in the CEE region.

Proven track record

Cătălin Suliman, who joins Schoenherr Bucharest as a local partner, focuses on providing legal advice on competition and intellectual property issues, as well as regulatory matters concerning the pharmaceutical and retail sectors. Prior to joining Schoenherr, Cătălin spent more than six years at the connected lawfirm of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Romania - D&B David and Baias law firm, where he held the position of a Managing Associate was heavily involved in providing a full range of competition assistance both to national and international clients, various intellectual property assistance and regulatory work in pharmaceutical and retail sectors. The most recent edition of the legal directory Chambers Europe highlights Cătălin’s work at the D&B David and Baias’ highly-regarded competition practice, quoting clients’ praise for Suliman as a “very talented lawyer with impressive technical skills.”

Cătălin has a strong track record of assisting clients on competition, unfair competition, state aid or intellectual property issues, as well as on the various aspects of industry-specific regulations in the pharmaceutical, retail, telecommunications, and manufacturing sectors. Prominent competition-related matters on which Cătălin advised include assisting a leading oil and gas group being investigated by Romania’s Competition Council. He also advised one of the country’s largest telecom operators in its competition investigation, which led to the application of the first commitments procedure in the telecom sector in the EU. Cătălin has also been involved in competition proceedings in a range of other industry sectors, including retail of fast moving consumer goods, wholesale of pharmaceutical products, doors manufacturing and distribution, waste of electronic equipment collection, and services rendered by autovehicles repairs. In addition, he has provided the entire spectrum of day-to-day advice on competition and compliance matters, as well as overseen competition-related trainings and mock dawn raids.

Apart from the field of competition law, Cătălin also has extensive experience in the Life Sciences sector covering a full range of advice to producers, wholesalers, private medical hospitals, pharmacies, and medical services providers and in Intellectual Property, for which he serves as an IP counselor on various matters involving trademarks, designs, specific know-how and copyright.

Strong academic background

In addition to his practice of law, Cătălin has been an external collaborator at the University of Bucharest’s Law Faculty starting with 2009, where he has taught competition seminars during the Business Law LLM at the Bucharest University. He is the co-author of a number of academic and legal industry publications, including the Romanian overviews in Kluwer Law’s Competition Law in Western Europe and the USA and in the Handbook of Competition Enforcement Agencies 2009-2012 published by Law Business Research.

Cătălin studied law at the Law Faculty of the University of Bucharest, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the field in 2005 before earning a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) in 2007. He has been a member of the Bucharest bar since 2006. He is also a member of the American Chamber of Commerce Competition taskforce that is addressing all major amendments of Romanian Competition Law and secondary legislation and liaising with the country’s Competition Council.
