Bucharest - 16 februarie 2011 - Central European firm Schoenherr has been appointed by the European Commission Di-rectorate General for Energy as leader of a consortium to advise the Commission on the project called "Best Renewable Energy Practices in EU 27".
The goal of the project is to present and analyse - both from a legal and technical per-spective - the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive (Directive 2009/28/EC) in all member states, identify gaps and also innovative solutions, and conclude with rec-ommendations on the way forward for each Member State.

“Due to the commitments of the Member States to increase their renewable energy quota, we have been able to build up a lot of experience in this field. In the last five years we have advised on the development of numerous projects including windparks, hydro plants, and photovoltaic and biomass installations in Central Europe. To be se-lected for this European Commission project is a reward to our energy team,” comments Schoenherr partner and project leader Markus Piuk.

In 2008 the European Commission proposed a legislative package designed to shape the European Union’s climate change policies. The package – known as the Renewable En-ergy Directive - became European legislation on the April 6, 2009 following its definite approval by the Council. The Member States were expected to have implemented the Renewable Energy Directive by December 5, 2010. Part of the package is the so-called 20/2020 target, which aims to have 20% of the EU’s energy consumption produced by renewable means by 2020. The package further includes a 10% renewable fuel target for each member state in the transport sector. By adopting the Climate Change Package the European Union set itself as a forefront policy maker for fighting climate change.
The consortium led by Schoenherr has on board Mercados EMI (Spain), CE Delft (the Netherlands), Point Carbon-Thomson Reuters (UK) and Ecologic (UK). The team compris-ing lawyers, technical experts and policy consultants exceeds 30 professionals.
